Disney Classics Come to Life
Walt Disney’s works are, for some people, a staple of their childhood. From their princesses and fairy-tale worlds to their animated creatures, Walt Disney Studios has produced music, movies and stage plays for over 90 years. With a reputation for creating classics, some of Disney’s films are hitting the big screen with a whole new life of their own. Over the years, Disney produced live-action remakes of some of their biggest hits. A few of the more recent live-action remakes include “Cinderella” (2015) and “Beauty and the Beast” (2017). With successful films like these under their belt, “Cinderella” and “Beauty and the Beast” raking in $543 million and over $1.2 billion, respectively, in the box office, Disney left fans wondering which classic would get a live-action makeover next.
After much anticipation, on Nov. 22 Disney released “The Lion King” trailer. The live-action remake will take the big screen on July 19, 2019 and follow the storyline of its animated counterpart that made $968 million in the box office.
Celebrities Donald Glover and Beyonce Knowles-Carter were confirmed to be taking part in the classic’s remake after several months of rumors circulating. The cast list, boasting a star-studded selection including James Earl Jones as Mufasa, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa and Keegan-Michael Key as Kamari, was officially released in November of this year.
Disney has big plans for 2019. Alongside “The Lion King,” the animations “Aladdin”, “Dumbo”, “Mulan” and “Lilo & Stitch” will also be released as live. In these films, we can expect to see stars such as Will Smith, Michael Keaton and Liu Yifei take on the famous roles. Remakes also in the works with undecided release dates are “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”, “The Little Mermaid”, “Lady and the Tramp”, “Cruella” (an origin story from 101 Dalmatians, set to star Emma Stone), “Tinker Bell” and “Pinocchio”. Disney’s live-action remakes are much anticipated and may prove themselves to be the next generation of classics.
