Stars Pull Their Way Into a Playoff Spot
After the Las Vegas Golden Knights left a bitter taste in the Dallas Stars’s mouths on opening night, the Stars were looking for revenge in the expansions team’s new home, the T-Mobile arena. Ben Bishop was in net for the Stars once again and the Knights put the rookie Malcolm Subban between the pipes in place for the injured Marc-Andre Fleury. Nonetheless, Subban went into the game with a 4-0 record.
The Knights were riding a five-game winning streak, while Dallas was coming off a 6-4 win at home against the Calgary Flames. It was obvious from the beginning the Stars wanted to implement a strong forecheck and play a lot of dump and chase. This led to many turnovers and good chances for Subban. Towards the end of the first, the Stars’s play got a little sloppy, and Vegas was rewarded quality scoring chances, but once again, Ben Bishop came to the rescue. Each goalie was impenetrable through one.
At the halfway mark of the second period, Dallas just flipped the switch. They built on each shift playing the body and had a good cycle game down low in the offensive zone. Then the Lone Star hero showed up, Radek Faksa. As of late he had been putting up good numbers in away games. He one-timed a pass from Dan Hamhuis in the back of the net to get it going. Greg Pateryn also got an assist on the play as well. As the second period was coming to end with just under 30 seconds left, Gemel Smith passed across the crease to Faksa, who buried it for his second of the night. All of sudden, right off the faceoff, Antoine Roussel picked the puck up, took it behind the defense and dished it to Radek Faksa. He capped off his night with a hat-trick, which was the fastest completion of a hat trick in the last 30 years of the NHL.
Dallas played a heavy defensive game in the third and neutralized every Vegas opportunity. They did a great job shutting down the red hot William Karlsson, who struggled getting time and space. The Stars played a fast-paced game ,and the Knights couldn’t keep up. Ben Bishop also picked up his 21st career shutout and jumped the Stars into a Wild Card spot even though it’s still too early to tell.
