Von Zimmer
I was intrigued by the initial appearance of Von Zimmer’s album, Freddie’s Extra Teeth; it piqued my interest because the album art was a picture of an everyday scene with the visual interest as the sun and its rays creating a rainbow effect. It was a unique album cover and I was excited to listen to the music.
I tried listening to the album in my car, and ended up learning that my disk player was broken, which only heightened my interest and expectations for the music that was to come. Upon listening to the first song, The End of the World, I was disappointed. I could barely hear Zimmer’s voice over the guitar and had to listen in very closely to understand what he was saying. Even so, I could barely hear the lyrics of the song and many of the other’s as the album progressed.
As the album continued on, I realized that the melodies of each song sounded very similar and in each song; there was very little variation. I could scarcely tell the song progressed because it was very repetitive. I was mildly surprised that the later songs varied from the others with the introduction of a harmonica or piano or even a guitar solo.
I realize that my initial excitement and expectation for this album was the most likely factor why I was extremely critical to this album. As a debut album, I was not as wowed by it as I expected to be, but with more time I believe that he will explore and expand his music to include various styles. I recommend this album and artist to listeners who are open to new styles of music.
